Interview with Sol Villanueva: We must learn to stop controlling everything in order to let go and start trusting life.
Sol Villanueva is a well-known journalist and now also a writer, author of the book Toledo 1520/2020.
In this interview with Alejandro Guerra, founder of Wake up Platform, journalist Sol Villanueva talks about her ordeal, from the moment she was admitted to the hospital, spending a month and a half on a stretcher totally immobilized.
Sol suffers from Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), a rare but serious disease that affects the peripheral nervous system, weakening the muscles and causing symptoms such as muscle weakness, tingling, lack of coordination and in some cases, paralysis.
An experience that has made him change and begin to see life in a different way, valuing what is important. An experience that has made him awaken his conscience and start living for real.
Trust in Life, Trust in Life, Trust in Life these are the words that somehow came to Sol Villanueva’s mind and that she could not stop repeating:
Trust in Life
In today’s busy world, with its fast pace and constant need to be in control, we often forget the importance of trusting life and allowing things to take their natural course. We want to know everything, control everything and make sure things go exactly as planned. However, there are times when we need to let go of the reins and trust that things will turn out the way they are supposed to. In this article, we will explore the importance of trusting life and how this attitude can bring benefits on both a personal and professional level.
Accepting uncertainty
Life is full of uncertainty. No matter how much we try to foresee every possible outcome and plan for every detail, there will always be aspects beyond our control. Instead of resisting this reality, we must learn to accept it and trust that things will unfold in the best possible way. By letting go of control, we release a great deal of stress and anxiety that comes with constantly trying to have everything under control. Instead of worrying about every little detail, we can focus on living in the present moment and seizing the opportunities that come our way.
Learning from adversity
When we trust in life, we also open ourselves to learn from adversity. Sometimes, things don’t go as we expected and we encounter unexpected challenges. Instead of feeling defeated or frustrated, we can adopt a growth mindset and see each obstacle as an opportunity to learn and grow. Life presents us with valuable lessons in difficult moments, and by trusting that everything has a purpose, we can find learning in even the most challenging situations.
Promoting flexibility
When we cling to the need to control everything, we become rigid and less adaptive. On the other hand, when we trust life, we foster flexibility and the ability to adapt to unexpected changes. This is especially relevant in the professional arena, where markets and circumstances can change rapidly. By trusting that things will somehow work out, we become more open to new ideas, perspectives and opportunities. Flexibility allows us to make the most of changing situations and discover innovative solutions that we might otherwise have overlooked.
Improving mental health
The need to control every aspect of our lives can have a negative impact on our mental health. Chronic stress, anxiety and the feeling of being constantly under pressure can affect our quality of life and overall well-being. By trusting life and letting go of the need to control everything, we release a great deal of mental baggage. We allow ourselves to flow with the course of events and find greater inner peace. As we learn to trust that things will turn out as they should, we cultivate a more positive and resilient attitude toward life’s challenges. This can have a significant impact on our mental health, helping us to reduce stress and anxiety, and improve our overall quality of life.
Building more authentic relationships
When we trust life and stop trying to control everything, we also open ourselves to new experiences and meaningful connections with others. By letting go of the need to be in absolute control, we allow relationships to flow naturally and authentically. We become more receptive and open to others’ perspectives, and this strengthens our human connections. By trusting that things will unfold as they should, we can build relationships based on mutual trust and sincere support.
Cultivating gratitude and enjoyment
When we try to control everything, we often focus on what we have not yet accomplished or what could go wrong. In contrast, by trusting life, we develop an attitude of gratitude and enjoyment for what we already have. We appreciate the small moments and blessings that surround us, rather than overlooking them in pursuit of the next goal or achievement. Trust in life allows us to live more fully and joyfully, valuing each experience and learning to savor every moment.
In a world obsessed with control and certainty, trusting life can seem like an act of bravery. However, by letting go of the reins and embracing uncertainty, we open ourselves to a range of possibilities and enriching experiences. By trusting that things will work out as they are meant to, we find the freedom to live in the present, learn from challenges and build more authentic relationships. In addition, we cultivate an attitude of gratitude and enjoyment, improving our mental health and overall well-being. So why not start trusting life today and allow things to unfold naturally?
Sol Villanueva suffers from Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), a rare but serious disease that affects the peripheral nervous system, weakening the muscles and causing symptoms such as muscle weakness, tingling, lack of coordination and, in some cases, paralysis. Overcoming GBS requires time, medical care and a comprehensive approach. Here are some recommendations to help you in the recovery process:
- Specialized medical care: It is essential to seek specialized medical care as soon as possible. Early diagnosis and proper treatment can make all the difference in recovery. A medical team experienced in the management of GBS will be able to provide you with the necessary therapies and care.
- Hospitalization and intensive care: In many cases, GBS requires hospitalization and intensive care to monitor symptoms and provide treatment. During this period, you may need respiratory support and care to prevent complications.
- Rehabilitation therapy: Once the acute phase of the disease has passed, rehabilitation therapy is essential to regain muscle strength and function. This may include physical therapy to improve mobility, occupational therapy to regain manual dexterity and speech therapy to overcome possible communication difficulties.
- Physical care: During the recovery phase, it is important to take care of your body and follow medical recommendations. This may include physical exercise supervised by health professionals, a balanced diet to promote recovery and adequate rest to allow the body to recover.
- Emotional support: Coping with GBS can lead to worry, stress and anxiety. Seek emotional support from loved ones, support groups or specialized health professionals. Sharing your feelings and concerns can help you cope with emotions and promote your mental well-being during the recovery process.
- Patience and self-compassion: Recovery from GBS can take time and each person has a unique process. It is important to be patient with yourself and allow yourself to rest and recover at your own pace. Practice self-compassion and acknowledge your accomplishments, even if they are small.
- Long-term medical follow-up: After the initial recovery phase, it is important to maintain long-term medical follow-up. This will allow you to evaluate your progress, detect possible relapses and provide any additional treatment you may need.
Remember that each case of GBS is unique, so it is essential to follow the specific recommendations and guidelines of your medical team. Recovery can be a gradual process, but with proper care and a comprehensive approach, it is possible to overcome Guillain-Barre Syndrome and move toward a full life.
Touching Bottom and Awakening Consciousness
Sol Villanueva had an Awakening of Consciousness after hitting rock bottom, often a transformative experience that is repeated in many cases after living through a traumatic experience.
At some point in our lives, we may experience what is commonly referred to as “rock bottom”. This term refers to situations in which we are faced with overwhelming challenges, significant losses or difficulties that push us to our emotional limits and cause us to question the meaning of our existence. However, while hitting rock bottom may seem like a time of despair and darkness, it can also be the catalyst for awakening our consciousness and embarking on a journey of personal transformation. In this article, we will explore the relationship between hitting rock bottom and awakening consciousness, and how this process can lead to a more meaningful and fulfilling life.

The crisis as an opportunity for change
When we find ourselves in a situation where everything seems to be falling apart around us, we often feel lost and hopeless. However, it is important to remember that even in the midst of chaos and adversity, there is the possibility for growth and transformation. Hitting rock bottom can serve as a wake-up call, a signal that something needs to change in our lives. It is in these moments of crisis that the opportunity opens up to examine our beliefs, values and patterns of behavior, and question whether they are serving or limiting us. By being willing to face the darkness, we can begin the process of awakening our consciousness and seeking a path to healing and personal growth.

The connection between suffering and consciousness
Suffering can be a powerful source of awakening. When we experience emotional pain or face extreme challenges, we are forced to confront our vulnerabilities and limitations. This confrontation with our own suffering can open us to a greater understanding of ourselves and the world around us. We realize the fragility of existence and the need to find deeper meaning in our lives. Through suffering, we become more empathetic, compassionate and open to the whole human experience. This allows us to connect with others in a more authentic way and cultivate more meaningful relationships.
-
The search for a greater purpose
The awakening of consciousness goes beyond mere personal introspection. As we deepen our transformation process, we find ourselves searching for a greater purpose in life. Hitting rock bottom can lead us to question our existence and explore our deepest passions, talents and values. As we connect with our true selves, we begin to discover what truly drives and inspires us. This drives us to take actions aligned with our purpose and contribute meaningfully to the world around us. Awakening consciousness leads us to live a more authentic and meaningful life, where our actions are in harmony with our values and we feel connected to a higher purpose.
-
The practice of mindfulness
Once we have begun to awaken our awareness, it is important to cultivate a mindfulness practice. Mindfulness allows us to be present in the present moment, without judgment, and helps us develop greater mental and emotional clarity. Through meditation and other mindfulness techniques, we can learn to observe our thoughts and emotions without identifying with them. This practice helps us to free ourselves from limiting thought patterns and gives us greater inner freedom.
By practicing mindfulness, we also become more aware of our daily actions and choices. We become more aware of how our decisions affect our own lives, as well as the lives of others and the planet as a whole. This allows us to make more conscious and responsible decisions that are aligned with our values and have a greater positive impact.
-
The expansion of the collective consciousness
As more individuals awaken their consciousness and live in accordance with their higher values, an expansion of collective consciousness is created. This phenomenon implies a paradigm shift in the way we relate to each other and to the world. As more people awaken to consciousness, movements for social, environmental and spiritual change are generated. Greater compassion, empathy and care for other human beings and for nature is fostered. The expansion of collective consciousness shows us that we are not alone in our journey and gives us a greater sense of connection and shared purpose.
In conclusion, hitting rock bottom can be the starting point for a journey of transformation and awakening of consciousness. Through confronting suffering and crisis, we have the opportunity to reevaluate our lives, find a higher purpose and live in accordance with our deepest values. The practice of mindfulness helps us cultivate greater inner clarity and freedom, while the expansion of collective consciousness brings us a sense of connection and shared purpose. By embracing this transformative process, we can experience a life that is more meaningful, authentic and in harmony with our deepest selves.
