Interview Fernando Botella, only for Search Engine users
Meditation is an ancient practice rooted in various cultures, which has gained recognition as an effective tool for self-knowledge and mental health management, supported by discoveries in the field of neuroscience. Beyond its spiritual value, this discipline has been highlighted as a remedy against stress and anxiety, promoting an integral wellbeing by reconnecting the individual with the present and reducing cortisol levels in the body.
From a scientific perspective, neuroscience research has shown that meditative practice increases the amount of “gray matter” in various brain regions related to memory, self-awareness, empathy and stress regulation, thus demonstrating that its benefits are tangible and measurable. Contrary to the notion that meditating involves emptying the mind, cultivating a state of calm and mindful awareness of the flow of thoughts and emotions can enable people to understand and address their inner challenges, uncovering the roots of their suffering. This, in my view, is transformative.
Despite its undeniable potential, initiating and sustaining a meditative practice can be challenging in a society that prioritizes constant stimulation. However, taking a few minutes a day to sit quietly can bring serenity and balance in the midst of the demands and bustle of everyday life.
Still, meditation has proven to be a transformative tool accessible to people of all backgrounds, experts and numerous case studies suggest. However, it is not without its critics, especially with regard to its increasing commercialization. It is crucial to maintain a critical approach, even toward culturally ingrained practices.
In short, meditation offers a path to wellness and self-knowledge. It may be the solution to stress that many seek, but it also represents a deeper path to understanding oneself and our connection to the world.
