Communication and relationship are two different but closely related concepts. Here I explain some of the differences between them:
- Definition: Communication refers to the process of exchanging information, ideas, feelings or thoughts between two or more people, either verbally or nonverbally. Relationship, on the other hand, refers to the emotional, social or personal connection established between two or more people.
- Nature: Communication is a process that can be temporary or situational, that is, it can occur at a specific time and be limited to a particular topic. Relationship, on the other hand, is a deeper and more enduring connection that is established between two people and can evolve over time.
- Purpose: Communication has a specific purpose, whether to convey information, persuade, inform or entertain. The relationship does not have a specific purpose, although it may be fueled by communication.
- Directionality: Communication is bidirectional, meaning that there is an exchange of information between two or more people. The relationship can be unidirectional or bidirectional, i.e., there can be an emotional connection between two people, but it does not necessarily have to be mutual.
In short, communication is a tool used to establish and maintain relationships, but the relationship itself is more than just communication. Relationship involves a deeper sense of connection that develops over time and may not necessarily depend on communication at all times.
Feelings play a fundamental role in human relationships, as they are the basis of the emotional connection that is established between people. Here I will explain some reasons why feelings are important in human relationships:
- Create a sense of connection: Feelings are the basis of the emotional connection that is established between two people. When we share our feelings with someone, we open up emotionally and create a deeper bond.
- Enable empathy: Feelings are a tool for understanding the emotions of others. When we are able to put ourselves in the other person’s shoes, we can better understand their perspective and establish more effective communication.
- They help build trust: When we share our feelings with someone, we show our vulnerability. This act of openness and trust can help strengthen the relationship and build a solid foundation of trust.
- Foster closeness: Feelings can help foster closeness and emotional support in relationships. When we share our feelings with someone, we are opening a door to receive comfort and emotional support.
- They help resolve conflicts: Feelings can be a useful tool for resolving conflicts. When we express our feelings honestly, we can help the other person understand how we feel and find solutions together.
Feelings are essential in human relationships, as they are the basis of the emotional connection established between people. They enable empathy, build trust, foster closeness and help resolve conflicts, among other things. It is important to be aware of our own feelings and be able to express them effectively in our relationships.
