You do yourself a lot of harm

Pensar y Hacer, vivimos en la sociedad del Pensar y el Hacer según nos cuenta Pablo d´Ors.

Thinking and Doing, the formula we use to solve everything, that’s the problem, we can’t solve everything by Thinking and Doing.

The current mentality is a practical mentality, people function from mental reasoning and common sense, a pragmatic way of living life, and that is very good for the day to day, and to solve the problems that everyday life offers us. For example, if a pipe breaks at home, I think that if I call the plumber, he will come to fix it, I make the call and the matter is solved.

The problem comes with the kind of issues that cannot be solved or healed by Thinking and Doing. Pablo d’Ors mentions in the video a case of extreme pain: the death of a child. What happens with that kind of problem?

No sabemos, no estamos preparados, nadie nos ha enseñado a resolver los problemas del alma. Los dolores del alma no se solucionan pensando y haciendo, sino atravesando y sintiendo.

Let’s say we have lost a loved one, if we think about the most common reactions, they are usually not to spend time alone, to be in company, to clear our heads thinking about other things, going out with friends, having a good binge to avoid feeling… that is to say, anything to avoid facing the pain and to cover it up however we can.

What if the way to heal this kind of pain was precisely by doing what we avoid so much? Since we are children, we understand that feeling pain is bad, crying is something negative and we try to avoid it at all costs, however, paradoxically it is the only way to go through the pain to heal. does this make any sense?

Facing pain is recognizing it in oneself, observing it and feeling it, not rejecting it. When you observe your pain, you are observing yourself, and as Pablo dÓrs points out in the video, when we look hard enough, we realize that there is pain, but there is no harm, there is no external agent or subject that causes us harm, we are the ones who hurt ourselves.

Following Paul’s metaphor, we have an arrow stuck in us, and we do not realize that in reality, there is no arrow, we feel the pain of an arrow, but there is no arrow, there is pain, but there is no harm.

If we continue to observe enough, we will also realize that the archer is you, that is, there is no one else but yourself causing you that pain, and depending on you and what you do, your way of managing it, you will go through a much more intense and lasting pain, you will hurt yourself a lot, or not.

If we continue observing, perhaps you will discover that the wound is you, and that you are capable of healing if you realize all this.
