Taught by Alex

Álex Gómez Marín

Your guide in "A Science of the Impossible".

Álex Gómez-Marín is a leading scientist whose career spans the fields of physics, biophysics and neuroscience. With a degree in Physics, a Master in Biophysics and a PhD in Theoretical Physics from the University of Barcelona, Alex has dedicated his life to exploring and understanding the deepest mysteries of the universe and the human mind.

Track Record and Achievements

After completing his PhD, Alex completed postdoctoral stays at prestigious institutions such as the EMBL-CRG Center for Genomic Regulation and the Champalimaud Center for the Unknown in Lisbon. Since 2016, he leads the Organismal Behavior Laboratory at the Institute of Neurosciences in Alicante, where he leads pioneering research in animal neuroethology and the microscopic origins of the arrow of time.

Alex was also named one of the 100 most inspirational people of 2023 by OOOM magazine.

Current Role

Alex is currently an associate professor (full scientist) at the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas and director of the Pari Center in Tuscany, Italy. His work focuses on the margins of human consciousness, exploring how it manifests and is measured in the real world. This line of research has earned him the Linda O'Bryant Research Award from the US Institute of Noetic Sciences in its first edition in 2023.

Research and Publications

Alex's multidisciplinary approach includes studies with diverse species, from flies and worms to mice and robots, offering a unique perspective on behavior and consciousness. His articles and papers covering these fascinating topics are available on his website: behavior-of-organisms.org.

A Mentor of Excellence

A Mentor of Excellence Álex Gómez-Marín is not only a renowned scientist, but also a passionate and empathetic communicator. His ability to combine scientific rigor with a unique open-mindedness makes him the ideal mentor to guide you on this journey of discovery in "A Science of the Impossible". Join this exclusive course and let Alex take you to explore the limits of mind and matter with an innovative and transformative perspective.

mind

Here we will investigate the limits of neuroscience and the understanding of the mind.

We will review the evolution of neuroscience from Ramón y Cajal to the present day, analyzing the three key areas: behavior, cognition and consciousness.

We will discern between the main current theories of consciousness and explore extreme phenomena such as near-death experiences and extrasensory perception.

Finally, we will compare the hypotheses about the brain as producer or enabler of consciousness.

subject

This block focuses on the mysteries of matter and the limits of physical knowledge.

We will take a historical tour from Galileo to the modern revolutions, highlighting the three branches of physics: classical, complex and quantum.

We will delve into advanced concepts such as the curvature of space, time dilation and the conversion of mass into energy, as well as the fascinating idea of quantum non-locality.

future

In the last block, we will reflect on a new science of consciousness and critically review the traditional scientific method.

We will discuss philosophical currents such as materialism, idealism, dualism and pan-experientialism, and examine whether the universe is a great Sudoku or a great mystery.

We will also explore transhumanism and the possibilities of human transcendence, outlining the competencies needed for the scientist of the future.
